- Review:
- I\'ve built the kit to use with an active electric bass and a 4x10 SWR Goliath cabinet. Man, this thing is LOUD when turning up enough to get power stage distortion - I\'m sure it would be sufficient for gigging in small to medium clubs. I\'ve bought a power attenuator to get distortion without going deaf. The clean tone and the distorted tone are both fantastic, plenty of adjustment possibilities as well. I\'m going to try 6CA7 tubes as well, eventually. I am curious if a passive bass or guitar makes it harder to push preamp to distortion; I have to crank most preamp knobs with the active bass.\r\n\r\nRegarding assembly: this was definitely tricky. I absolutely would NOT recommend it for non-detail-oriented people, also NOT for beginners. There are so many tiny details that must be right! But if you have several (simpler) high-voltage projects under your belt and feel confident enough, this amplifier is absolutely a dream to play and the kit is excellent. I was missing 1ohm resistors for bias measurement but used some 10ohm from my own stock. But overall the quality and content of the kit is very good, and the cost is about 1/4 of buying a vintage (or a remake/copy) Hiwatt DR103. The assembly (not including prep work) took about 30 solid hours of assembling, wire cutting, soldering, voltage testing, etc.
